Flipkart is All Set to Land in Social Gaming Industry

Walmart-owned Flipkart has acquired the Intellectual Property from Mech Mocha so as to strengthen its gaming strategy. The acquisition has been done for an undisclosed amount. Mech Mocha’s gaming team will join Flipkart with the acquisition. The team will help Flipkart in developing new and innovative formats to engage with users.

Hello Play is a social gaming platform that is run by Mech Mocha. Now the question arises, what is social gaming? Social gaming is referred to a concept in which an online game is played through social media networks. An online game is generally a multiplayer game.

Bengaluru-based Mech Mocha which was founded by Arpita Kapoor and Mohit Rangaraju in 2014. Accel Partners, Blume Ventures, and Shunwei Capital are some of the great investors of Mech Mocha. A person can access the gaming platform of Mech Mocha in seven Indian local languages. 10 popular Indian multiplayer games such as Ludo, Carrom, Snakes and Ladder, and Cricket are also available on Mech Mocha's gaming platform.

Flipkart turns the ball in their court by simply observing the pattern of social mobile gaming. Some of the observations:

  • The rapid adoption of social mobile gamings in India.
  • Nowadays consumers who are socially distanced look for ways to connect with friends and family over fun casual games.

“We see many first-time e-commerce users come online through formats such as video and games, as they build familiarity with the medium. Our observations of Flipkart GameZone, reflect this trend as we see a strong correlation between casual gamers becoming early shoppers on Flipkart for their digital journey. Through this transaction, we will strengthen our capabilities in the gaming domain with access to Mech Mocha's IP, games, and talented team that will help us accelerate our efforts in this space,” said Prakash Sikaria, Vice-President, Flipkart.

"The company is focused on providing consumers with an opportunity to access great products and content while giving them an engaging experience," he added. Earlier in 2015, Flipkart also invested an undisclosed amount earlier in the year 2015 into a $1 million seed funding round of Mech Mocha during their initial years.
