The JaQuel Knight is the choreographer who is famous for the iconic dance moves of American pop titan Beyonce's song titled ‘Single Ladies’. He has recently marked history in the world of Intellectual Property Laws by obtaining copyright on his iconic dance moves. He is the first one to date who got approval.
JaQuel Knight has established Knight Choreography and Music Publishing Inc. with the aim to take control over his creative work. This is the first time in history that someone has done something like this.
JaQuel Knight came to the limelight when he choreographed the dance moves in a video for Queen Bey's ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)’. Ever since Beyonce started considering him as her go-to choreographer. Thus, he choreographed several tours of Beyonce and even her epic Coachella performances.
The history-making choreographer is also behind the dance moves in videos of Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show, as well as Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s "WAP". He is undoubtedly a great choreographer who knows how to do his work in an astonishing manner.
"Copyrighting movement is about putting the power back in the artist’s hands," said Knight in an interview. "We set a historic precedent with our ‘Single Ladies’ copyright achievement, and we are thrilled to be launching Knight Choreography & Music Publishing Inc., so that the next generation of artists are afforded the same platform, resources, and tools to thrive, creatively and financially, in the commercial music industry."
The company of JaQuel Knight, Knight Choreography & Music Publishing, will be responsible for looking after the rights to Knights dance moves in addition to operating as a music publisher. However, the company will also look into the licensing deals and protection of IP.
There are many incidents where copyright infringement of dance moves took place. One out of such incidents is when a TikTok star Addison Rae decided to perform on ‘The Tonight Show' with a series of dance moves that were popular on the video platform and she didn’t choose to give the credit to the creators. As a result, this led to a backlash, and the very next day without any delay, host Jimmy Fallon, said while addressing the controversy on-air, "We recognize that the creators of those dances deserve to have their own spotlight."
JaQuel Knight sees a long partnership with lawyer David Hecht to overcome all such kinds of infringement and protection of other IPs. Hecht is the person who helped Knight in securing the copyright for "Single Ladies." Knight will be further assisted by his manager, producer Mary Pelloni.
