Subreddits are subsidiary threads or categories within the Reddit website. Reddit is a social news aggregation, web content rating and discussion website. Registered members are allowed to post messages, links or images to the site which are further commented on by other members. Recently, a subreddit by the name of ‘Reddit Soccer Streams’ was the victim of a Copyright infringement lawsuit.
The forum hosted free streams for football matches, most popularly the matches of English Premier League (EPL) and Scottish Premier League. Legal action was taken by English Premier League which owns the Copyright for all broadcasts of the competition’s matches and takes strict actions against illegal streaming of its matches, which the forum was openly conducting. Reddit Soccer Streams which had more than 4,30,000 subscribers was contacted by Reddit administrators and was told that the forum will be shut down if they continued to host such infringing content.
English Premier League takes rough actions against anyone infringing their Copyrights or involving in illegal streaming. In May last year, “a renowned pirate” of copyright-protected football broadcasts was ordered to pay the EPL $777,481 after it was found guilty of selling subscriptions to illegal streams. Also, last year the ownership body of EPL won a UK High Court order requiring British internet service providers to block illegal streaming of EPL matches.
The owners of the forum advertised to the members of the subreddit two new sites for streaming the EPL matches and closed the subreddit after facing Copyright infringement charges.
